Is The Stock Market Open on Christmas Day?

Christmas Day is one of the few big holidays each year when almost everything closes. While you can plan to go to gas stations and grocery stores, most other locations and services close down. In 2021, Christmas Day is a Saturday, which means that many things (such as some banks and post offices) would be closed anyway. So, is the stock market open on Christmas Day? Here’s what you need to know.

Christmas 2021 is on a Saturday

The stock market doesn’t have Saturday trading hours. Both NYSE and NASDAQ are closed on the weekends. Therefore, even if it weren’t Christmas, the stock market would close December 25, 2021. That makes the answer to the question, “So, is the stock market open on Christmas Day?” extra simple this year.

Is The Stock Market Open on Christmas Day?

That said, the answer to “is the stock market open on Christmas Day?” would be no regardless of what day of the week the holiday were to fall on. Christmas Day is one of the annual federal holidays. Also known as bank holidays, these are days when many government services close. The post office, banks, courthouses, etc. all tend to close for most federal holidays. Being one of the most widely-celebrated federal holidays, Christmas Day is one when pretty much everything closes down for the day. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the stock market closes for Christmas Day.

Is The Stock Market Open on Christmas Eve?

Usually, Christmas Eve isn’t part of the federal holiday calendar. Therefore, the stock market is usually open on Christmas Eve. However, things are different this year. Because Christmas falls on a Saturday, we observe it as a federal holiday on Friday. Therefore, things that are normally open on Fridays may close on Friday, December 24, 2021, in observation of Christmas Day. Learn more about Christmas Eve 2021 Stock Market Hours.

When Will The Stock Market Re-Open After Christmas?

Since Christmas Day is on a Saturday, the market will remain closed the entire weekend as normal. Then, normal trading hours resume on Monday, December 27, 2021. Regular NYSE and NASDAQ trading hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m ET. Of course, you might also take advantage of early trading hours and late trading hours. Those are as normal on the Monday following Christmas this year.

Looking Ahead to The End of The Week

Remember that at the end of the week following Christmas is the New Year’s holiday. New Year’s Day is another federal holiday. Usually, New Year’s Eve is not a federal holiday. Therefore, in a regular year, the stock market would close again for New Year’s Day but would be open on New Year’s Eve. However, just like Christmas, New Year’s Day 2022 falls on a Saturday. Therefore, we observe it on the Friday before the holiday which is, of course, New Year’s Eve. As a result, the stock market will close on Friday, December 31, 2021 in observance of New Year’s Day. Keep that in mind when planning your post-Christmas trading activities on the stock market. It’s a shorter week than usual as a result of the days of the week the holidays fall on this year.
